Hypothesis

It is feasible to make candles out of used cooking.
Candles out of used cooking oil can be comparable to candles out of paraffin wax (commercial candle) in terms of:

a. Lifespan

b. Type of flame
Scope and Limitations
Upon conducting the experimentation process, the researchers had found out some limitations within the projects and these are the following:
  1. The researchers did not include the measurement of the amount of light given off by each candle because the instrument used to measure was not available in the surroundings.
  2. Upon testing the candles quality, the researchers only include the following parameters:

a. Lifespan of the candles

b. Type of flame produce by the candles

Definition of terms

Candle - a stick of solid wax with an embedded wick burned for light

Hydrocarbon - are compounds that can produce light to candle

Stearic acid - serves as the hardener in candle making

Paraffin wax - a white, waxy substance consisting of a mixture of Hydrocarbons, distilled from petroleum and used for making candles, sealing jars, etc.

Significance of the Study
In our country, today more ways are now made to utilize common things in order to make products easier and cheaper. In this research study, used cooking oil is used as an alternative for paraffin wax in candle making.
In the field of science, this study contributes a lot for the reason that we can find alternative for paraffin wax as main component in candle making; besides paraffin was derived from petroleum and the latter is much expensive. This study contributes knowledge to the researchers and also to the community in the sense of finding an alternative way to utilize used cooking oil that may pollute and clog canals and sewerage system if not recycled and used again in essential ways, instead of chemically synthesized sources. It also improves the human condition physically in minimizing the waste oil that pollutes our country.
Background of the study

Since the ancient Egyptian times, candles were already used in funeral services although they were replaced first by kerosene lamps and later by incandescent lamp, their used actually expanded because of their ornamental value. Candles are cylinder of waxes, containing a wick that gives light when burning. Today's modern candle is made up of Stearic acid (35%), beeswax (5%) and paraffin (60%). Stearic acid serves as the hardener, while beeswax serves as the fragrant of candle while burning.
At the present time, our country's economy is lowering down. This is due to less productivity and our country has less exports and more imports from other country. In relation to candle industry, one big factor that affects us now is the availability of paraffin wax in our country. Paraffin wax is a translucent waxy solid mixture of hydro carbons and it is derived principally from the distillation of petroleum. Production of paraffin wax is mainly in Japan and China. Our Country actually imports this product.
The researches have come up with the idea of making candles out of used cooking oil instead of paraffin wax. Used cooking oil has the ability to harm up and provide light, besides during World War II in our country; used cooking oil was used as an alternative for kerosene to support light during the night. The researchers had chosen used cooking oil because ordinarily, it is discarded and this waste oil pollutes and clogs canals and sewerage systems.
This project aims to produce a low-priced, high quality candle by using used cooking oil as a major component instead of paraffin wax.

Statement of the Problem

This study tries to find out the feasibilty of the used cooking oil as an additive component of candle. This study aims to produce a law-priced, high quality candle by using used cooking oil as a major component.
Today, candles are made not only for lighting purposes but for many other uses such as home decor, novelty collections and as fixtures for ocassions such as wedding and birthdays.
Cooking oil is a major kitchen item in filipino households. It is used in fastfood outlets, it is used in food preparations. We all know that used cooking oil is discarded. This waste oil pollutes the canals and other places specially in wet areas.
This study aims to answer the following questions:
1. What would be the candle compositions to be used?
2. What would be the procedure in the making of the candle?
3. Does the study reached its aim?
4. What will you test to verify that you've made a better product?
